Victor Newman is Free-Should He Be?

The center of Genoa City society, Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) is no longer languishing and manipulating from behind prison bars.  Was anyone who follows The Young and the Restless truly surprised when Victor was released from prison with time served?  I was most definitely NOT surprised, but I have mixed feelings about this entire storyline and the direction it took.

While The Young and the Restless would not be the Y&R the fans all know and love without Victor’s ever-looming presence in all Genoa City activities, there is an undercurrent of concerns and grumblings about his release.

I can completely sympathize with Phyllis Abbott’s (Gina Tognoni) strong reaction to Victor’s inevitable freedom.  In my opinion Phyllis was violated repeatedly due to the sinister machinations of Victor Newman.  Victor’s intentions were evident and he did this knowingly, and without apparent remorse.

I hope the writers on Y&R make an asserted effort to demonstrate some way for Victor to begin to make amends.  Women and men are victimized in this world in an ongoing basis and this instance was ongoing for the better part of a year.  Setting aside Victor Newman’s actions without demonstrating a clear path to make amends, sends out a message that is difficult to swallow.

As a long-time fan of The Young and the Restless, I hope they have not completely written themselves into a corner making it far too difficult to approach liking Victor again.  While he has always been a character the viewers love to hate — I find myself stuck as I await a valid rationale for easily he has “gotten off”.

I would love to hear the views of other Y&R fans.

  1. I totally agree. I had thought that Victor was actually going to spend some time in jail! I could not believe that he did that to Jack and Phyllis, and I cannot believe that Jack is not more angry, or that Victor’s family caved. Why bother with the story if they are not going to see it though?

    • These are some of the feelings I have too. I don’t believe there was enough retribution. It would seem that having Victor in prison just didn’t work for moving stories forward and that’s why this hasty turn.
I also agree about Jack — shocked he wasn’t angrier about the outcome.
