Love/Hate Relationship with Soaps – Part 4: The Young & the Restless

Spread the love

To round out this four part mini-series, we will end with the soap opera that focuses on the lives, loves, tragedies, and traumas of high powered movers and shakers who run multinational companies.  The Young and the Restless takes the wealthiest people and gives them the most damaging personal lives.

While I enjoy most of the storylines on Y&R there is one that I find most engaging as well as one that I reach for the fast forward button when it airs.  There have recently been other storylines I feel strongly about, but, for now, I will only address these currently running plots

Love:  I find myself completely drawn in by the complications constantly invading Adam Newman’s (Justin Hartley) drive to lead a quiet and happy life.  Although Adam has done some extremely destructive things to his family in the past, he has become the most likable character in the Newman family.  Adam has many flaws, but they make him all the more endearing, especially since he is the first to admit his mistakes of the past.  In addition, his relationship with his wife, Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan), and his son, Connor, has developed into one of the most stable nuclear family units on the show.

Hate: I have followed Summer Newman’s (Hunter King) life from her dramatic birth to her near-death experience as a young child, leading to her achievements as she faced learning challenges.  Summer rose above all the obstacles in her life, earning the nickname “Super Girl” from her father, Nick (Joshua Morrow), achieving far more than ever expected and excelling at whatever she set her mind to accomplishing.  However, Summer has become the character with the least common sense.  While Hunter King plays her role quite well, Summer has developed the worst judge of character going from bad relationship to bad relationship, disposing of the one good relationship along the way.  The writers have made it so difficult to like this character who once won our hearts with all her drive to achieve beyond her predicted abilities.

I must add, I am thrilled Hunter King will become a regular on the primetime show, Life In Pieces.  I have enjoyed her performances on this quirky and creative sitcom.

Thank you all so much for joining me on this visit through the best and worst of our current soap stories.  It has been wonderful sharing the most loved and loathed stories together.  Let’s round it out with a chat about what you love most or wish would disappear from The Young & the Restless.

It has been great reading your views on the variety of soap plots out there today.  Some have made me think about the way I view some story points on the soap operas.

Without any further delay, let’s talk!!!
