Soap Pet Peeves

I adore all my soaps, but there are still a few pet peeves that get to me.  Probably the most difficult one to watch is when a soap regurgitates a very well known story and/or pattern to the point that viewers can only roll their eyes when watching, rather than enjoying the performance.  One example, is the Young and the Restless, once again, causing baby drama for Sharon.  Knowing she is the presumed mother of Sage’s child, and yet ignoring the all-to-familiar DNA results, Sharon continues parenting “Sully”, né “Christian”.

My other biggest pet peeve is when writers clearly take liberties with the importance of legacy characters and respect for familial connections, ignoring the intelligence and passion of long term fans.  Many of you will recognize Days of Our Lives as the culprit in this case.  For example, whatever the rationale in the writers’ room, I find it difficult to understand why the demise of legacy character, Will Horton, was necessary.  I still hope he will, somehow, return — imposters and doppelgängers are always a good way out of the debacle and insult to long-term viewers.  In addition, it would seem long overdue for Claire to call Hope her grandmother.  Claire and Ciara appear as high school friends, when DOOL fans all know Ciara is Claire’s aunt.

There are so many wonderful things about the soaps that far outweighs when their choices give me a bitter feeling,  However, the examples illustrated above certainly make watching very difficult.  When moments like this happen, I try to remember all the reasons I love the soap operas.  For the Young and the Restless, whenever they return to Newman / Abbott large-scale events, I can not help being drawn in.  When Days of Our Lives gives us special moments with the Hortons and/or Bradys, I can’t help but be engaged–especially the annual tree-trimming chez Horton.

I would love to hear what your pet peeves are, including any examples you would like to share.  Please feel free to share your opinions — it does not matter whether I agree or not!  My only request is that you remain respectful.  So let’s get down to it and talk!

  1. Excellent. You KNOW I totally agree wrt Will Horton being killed off.
    How about also this:
Creating brand new characters and retconning history (ie: Maggie/Summer on Days) instead of writing for the family already established (Maggie has daughters already). Summer taints the legacy of Maggie and Mickey’s love. She’s only temporary, too. Ridiculous.
See also: Demios Kiriakis. Why not have brought in Alex Kiriakis instead of creating a long lost relative??? Vincent Irazarry could have played an “aged” Alex.

    • I love your ideas about respecting and bringing in “new” versions of already established characters. They could be performed by the actors in the current roles. I could definitely have seen Marie Wilson take over the roles of either of Maggie’s daughters.

ITA that VI could’ve played an older Alex, as he is much older than Sonny.

Let’s hope we see some of these changes.

I knew you would agree about Will Horton. I still have a great deal of anger about killing off that LEGACY character!

  2. It totally drives me crazy that Claire is treated like the girl next door by Hope. Also, I’m still having a hard time with some of the kids growing up so fast. It doesn’t seem like Hope would be old enough to have an 18 year old granddaughter. Maybe it’s just me & I am kind of stuck in the past.

    • While I can accept the concept of prematurely SORAS’ing the kids (juggling ages is a mainstay on soaps). I’ve gotten a bit immune, having watched soaps for over 45 years.

It does bother me that Claire is NOT treated as Hope’s granddaughter when they’re in the same scene. It seems rather awkward to watch at this point.

  3. I only watch Days so all my pet peeves relate to that show. The show seems to bring back characters with no story for them. Belle and Shawn were just plopped back on the canvas with no direction. I agree that the Summer character is not necessary but Marie Wilson would have made a good Sarah. Sarah and Maggie must have some lingering issues to work out.

One story I like is Maggie revisiting the paralysis. It must be so scary for her to face a demon she thought was behind her. I am looking forward to see how Maggie (and the writers) handle this.

    • I am also pleased with the revisiting of the paralysis s/l for Maggie, although for a completely different reason. Suzanne Rogers is amazing and watching her deal with this new trauma in her life is wonderful!

I’m with you about wishing MW was playing Sarah. I hate the thought of Marie leaving — I think she’s an outstanding actor!

      • I agree about Suzanne being amazing. The small moment the other day when she was looking out the condo window and you could see the regret and sadness for the life she has lost (temporarily I hope) was wonderful. No words but she was able to convey feelings. To tell the truth, Suzanne is sometimes the only reason I stick with Days

  4. I only watch Days so i will comment on that. It drives me crazy when Hope does not even recgonize Claire as her granddaughter. Us viewers are nit dumb. If Days can bring back Aidein there is no reason why they cannot bring back Will. My goodness he is a famiky member of two core families. The Brady’s and Horton’s.

    • I’m totally on board with your suggestions, Kellie!

If we’re bringing back the dead, it’s long overdue to bring back Will!

You’re right — the viewers are NOT dumb! 😀

  5. So I don’t keep up with soaps too much, but it really bothered me when Days of Our Lives killed off Paige. I know not many people were thrilled with her, but I liked her and JJ. Moral of the story: when Paige was killed I really had no interest anymore.

    • I have a feeling you weren’t alone. And now that she just won an Emmy for that role, I have a feeling we’ll be seeing more of that lovely actress in the near future!
