While it is exciting to watch the rich, famous, and glamorous characters of daytime television, there is something to be said for the infrequent additions of characters who we might come across in our own lives. Rarely on a soap opera do you get a character who is so down-to-earth that her appeal is she could qualify as your neighbor, your friend, or anyone you might run across in a normal (non-Hollywood) day-to-day life. That’s the case with the character of Vivienne Avant on The Bold and the Beautiful, played by the talented Anna Maria Horsford.

Vivienne is a woman many viewers can relate to.  She is the woman watching soap operas. However, we are privileged to get to see her on our own TV screens regularly.

The episode in which Vivienne learned the truth of her husband, Julius’s (Obba Babatunde) long past and hidden affair leading to the birth of Sasha (Felisha Cooper) was so emotional it had me reaching for the tissue box.  This is certainly not something I was expecting. The dialogue-free, expressive performances by Ms. Horsford and her young co-stars, Reign Edwards (as Nicole) and Felisha Cooper were deeply moving.

The choice to allow all three women to demonstrate the depths of their talent without the addition of unnecessary dialogue was perfect. To say their emotional state, and reactions to the revelation, came across loud and clear, would be an understatement.  Thanks to a combination of quality directing, editing, and especially acting, the scene was outstanding!

I hope we continue to see relatable characters on our soaps who are dealing with enormous emotional dilemmas. Moments like this are why I adore soap operas.

Please share your opinions on this special moment on The Bold and the Beautiful or any other situations handled similarly on any of the soaps!  I always look forward to hearing from all of you!

  1. I love Anna Maria Horsford. I loved her scenes with Andrew McCarthy in St. Elmo’s Fire and she certainly could hold her on with the hilarious Sherman Hemsley and the handsome Clifton Davis in Amen. It was a wonderful surprise learning that she was on B&B. Btw, her character Naomi in St. Elmo’s Fire thought Kevin (Andrew McCarthy) was gay – I did too.

    • She’s an amazing actor and I have loved Ms. Horsford’s performances in all the projects/shows you mentioned. I’m so glad she’s become a frequent recurring character on B&B.

Loved her in St. Elmo’s Fire! 🙂
